Is your hair your crowning glory or, is it something that you’d rather keep under your hat?! If your hair is not quite what you’d like it to be, then it could be that you have forgotten some of the basic hair care rules that you should be following. Every day, your hair gets a battering from the elements, pollution, and from the sun and, if you don’t take care of your hair, no amount of expensive hair products will ever put it right. So let’s get back to the basics and take a look at ten natural hair care tips that every girl should know.

1. Keep it clean, but use a mild shampoo

You do need to shampoo regularly to keep your hair looking healthy, but don’t overdo it. For most people, shampooing every other day is enough to keep their hair clean and, any more than that and you will strip all the natural oils from your hair and make it dry and brittle. You should also use the mildest shampoo that you can find, and one that is sulphate free.

2. Don’t scrub your hair dry

Your hair is extra prone to damage when it is wet, so if you are scrubbing it dry with a towel, then you are probably breaking and damaging your hair. The best thing to do is to pat your hair dry with an old tee shirt. They are far more absorbent than a towel is anyway, and they won’t damage your hair.

3. Don’t tug at tangles

Another sure way that you will damage your hair and even pull some of it out by the roots is by being too impatient with tangles. Tease out tangles with a wide toothed comb before you even try to use a brush. When you brush, brush all the way from your roots to the tips and that way you will spread your natural oils evenly over the full length of your hair.

4. Avoid too much heat

Too much heat is really bad news for your hair, so turn down the temperature setting in all your heated tools. Let your hair air dry naturally whenever you have the time, and you shouldn’t even really wash your hair with very hot water either.

5. Deep condition once a week

Your hair will be much more manageable and shiny, if you give it a deep conditioning treatment once every week. You don’t need any fancy conditioning products to do this; oils like olive oil, coconut oil, linseed oil and almond oil will do the job just as well. Warm up some of your favourite oil and massage into your hair (make sure the oil is not too hot). Wrap your head in a towel and leave it for an hour or so, and then wash it again with warm water and shampoo.

6. Keep your hair well-trimmed

The longer you leave between trims, the more noticeable split ends and stray hairs are going to be. You should be aiming to get a trim at least every two months, even if you don’t think you need it. Some people also say that regular trims helps to make hair grow thicker too.

7. Protect your hair from the weather

If you want to keep your hair shiny and healthy, then protect it from the weather with a hat. Both the sun and the cold wind can dry out your hair and, if you live in a big city, then pollution will take its toll as well. If you are going to be out in the open air for any length time, then pop on a hat to cover your hair and that will keep it in good condition.

8. Protein rich hair masks

If you are prone to frizzy hair, then alternate between a weekly hot oil conditioning treatment and high protein hair mask. The simplest protein hair mask is made by mixing the yolks of two eggs with some lukewarm water, or you could use mashed avocado or mayonnaise. Massage your natural hair mask into your hair, wrap your head in a towel and leave it on for about an hour before you wash it out again.

9. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month

Clarifying shampoos are extra strong shampoos that are designed to remove the build-up of hair product that can accumulate on your hair. For most people, shampooing once a month with a clarifying shampoo will be enough; any more might actually damage your hair. A clarifying treatment, once a month, will lift the excess product from your hair and bring back its natural shine.

10. Eat and drink your way to healthy hair

Your hair can be affected by what you eat and drink too. To keep your hair nourished and hydrated, you need to be eating a balanced diet that includes essential fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. You also need to stay well hydrated, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water each day. What’s good for your body is also good for your hair. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds and nuts and it will help keep your hair looking shiny and bouncy.
